When I was growing up I didn’t know what Lent was. Embarrassingly, I didn’t know about Lent until St. James United Church in Waterdown used my book, WATER IN THE DESERT for their Lent Celebrations. I had heard about it, but since the churches I had attended in the past didn’t observe Lent I had no clue what it was about.
My involvement with St. James during their Lent events helped me to see the value in being a part. Taking 40 days out of every year to focus on your relationship with Christ and what He did for us on the cross could never be a bad thing. I really don’t know why my church doesn’t honor this tradition to prepare your heart for Easter? I know it’s not mandated in the Bible or anything, but it’s such a good thing. If you want to read up on some of the times the Bible talks about people who set apart 40 Days to meet with God check out Todd’s

KICKSTART the next 40 days of your life! Sign Up for FREE on http://www.takethe40daychallenge.com to take your 40 Day Challenge! You’ll receive 40 days worth of emails that coincide with our devotional books; WATER IN THE DESERT, SOUL H2O or 40 DAYS IN THE MAN CAVE. The emails are short and inspiring. Some are video clips, others are prayers, quotes, images you can download or just a quick message of encouragement; all related to that day’s devotion.
JUST 10 MINUTES A DAY TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Todd and I are committed to helping people build or enhance their habit of PERSONAL daily devotions. Just 10 Minutes a Day will change your life! We know that getting into God’s Word on a daily basis is what will sustain you through everything you face in life; the good and the bad. You wouldn’t eat one day a week and then wonder why you’re cranky on day 3 or 4 without food would you? Your spiritual appetite is the same. You can’t just fill up at the church buffet on Sunday and expect that to get you through the week. You need daily bread!
FOR THE KIDS
If you’d like something fun and engaging that your kids could follow along with you on, then our WATER DROPLET program is the perfect thing! Throughout Lent we’re giving our Kid’s pages out FREE! We hope that you’ll go through the scriptures at the bottom of the pages as a family. Model to your children the value of getting into God’s Word. That was the idea given to us from St. James and each church that has done the pages in their Sunday School has told us how much their kids loved them! Families have been changed forever by starting this habit of spending time talking about God’s Word together in a casual fun way.
1 page per week for each of the 3 different age categories. You get them all so, no matter what age your children are there’s something for them to do.
Hope this helps you prepare your heart for Easter and all that God has for you this year!

P.S. Observing Lent is new to our family, too, since I never grew up with it in church. I’ll have to show this to my husband.
Isn’t it funny how some of our church’s don’t teach it. I wish mine had. I think it makes Easter more powerful and momentous.

Wow, congratulations that your book was used for such a wonderful purpose!
Michele,
Thanks for your ever-encouraging words 🙂

I grew up Catholic, so lent was a BIG deal. I just wish I could keep that same reverent focus the other 325 days of the year! XO
Now that’s the trick isn’t it Liz 🙂

Sherry, how fun is that, that your book was used by a church for their lent celebrations. Love how God has plans for everything He calls us to do, even beyond the immediate. 🙂 — I hope the challenge goes well! I have some other things I’m involved in for that period, so I won’t be able to join you this time, but perhaps another time. 🙂 Look forward to hearing how God works. ((Hug)) Thanks for sharing with #ChasingCommunity, Sherry. xoxo
Brenda,
Our Challenge website is set up so that people can sign up any day and the emails automatically come to their inbox the day after they sign up. People have been taking the challenge for 2 years now and we started church challenges just last year. It’s very exciting to work with my hubby on this. Praying God continues to use you and the community you’re building for His glory!

We didn’t observe Lent growing up either, Sherry, and as an adult I found myself longing for the traditions and longing for the wonder that came through seeking Him in them. Our church still doesn’t participate in LENT as a corporate body, but I do love the power of seeking him purposefully over a set apart time that following those traditions lead us into.
I think it is fantastic that someone was using your book like that. That is awesome.
🙂 Blessings Sherry!
Dawn
Thanks Dawn! It really was amazing to me, specially since I didn’t know about Lent. I learned a lot. Hope you have a blessed weekend!
