  • Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable is a Deeper Waters post, kind of like a mini-Bible Study and I know it will really challenge your faith and inspire you to trust God with more of your life. I really encourage you to download and use a Soul H2O Journal Page to help you get the most out of this post and draw from the MANY Scripture references in the Drawing From The Well section at the bottom.

    Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

    Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Last weekend Todd and I both spoke at a Pechakucha Night put on by his amazing friend, Andy Vasily.

Pechakucha-20 x 20 slideIf you’ve never heard of Pechakucha, it’s a gathering of friends designed by renowned architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham where presenters share a 6 minute, 40 speech with 20 slides that change automatically every 20 seconds.

Let me just say, It’s a challenge. Even though I love presenting and even get paid for speaking, I saw this as a challenge. Believe it or not, speaking longer is actually easier than speaking for such a short time, trying to memorize so your words match the image on the screen was a challenge for me, especially when I was a month past due for my B12 shot!

Both Todd and I had an incredible time at the event and heard some amazing speeches. We both got a little lost in our slides at times (like many people did), but at the end felt better for the experience and know we could improve next time.

Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is a good thing and, if you want to follow God, you’ve got to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Taking a look how Jesus discipled his followers should be our big tip-off to reveal this about Christ’s character. Take the disciples’ experience in Matthew 14 for example.

From Feeding To Floating To Sinking—Then Walking on Water

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds.
    Matthew 14:22-33 ESV

Peter and the boys had been helping Jesus run a missional event where they got to take part in the miraculous feeding of 5000 people! Even before the crowd was gone, Jesus directed the disciples to get to the other side, making them go by way of the water, in a boat. Soon after, the wind and waves began to batter the boat and they feared for their lives.

Now before you start that Oh, Jesus wouldn’t have been so pushy and made them go into a potentially life-threatening circumstance, let me help you understand the original wording of this verse in Greek. Anagkazó is what many many Bible versions translate as “made, insisted, compelled, constrained, or directed” could just as easily been translated as “forced” since Strong’s Concordance and other Bible Dictionaries say the word means “to force, compel, constrain, urge”.

Jesus didn’t come to make you comfortable; He came to make you a brave witness.

Jesus isn’t concerned with your comfort level and is completely comfortable, making you uncomfortable.

Once Jesus led them to a place where their faith could be tested, this is the place where Peter’s faith rose to the level of confidence in God’s strength where he was able to walk on water. Ya, he did allow fear to creep back in and started to sink again but this faith-building exercise is what I believe God used to help construct a foundation of faith in Peter that would one-day grow so strong that he pushed through and preached, leading thousands upon thousands to faith in Christ.

Jesus Is Totally Fine With You Feeling Uncomfortable

The reality is, if you don’t get stretched, you don’t grow. When God allows your circumstances to push you beyond your natural limits, that’s when His ‘super’natural kicks into gear. You can trust you have what it takes to pass through these troubled waters, just like the disciples did because God clearly believes you can!

    Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

You don’t have to walk in your own strength, God’s offering His to you each day. Be like Peter, step out of the boat and get comfortable being uncomfortable, the water’s just fine!

    Prayer

Father… Thank you for all the examples in the Bible of flawed people, just like me, overcoming difficulties and reaching their destiny. Help me to get get comfortable being uncomfortable, so I don’t miss out on watching your strength displayed in my life, leading others to put their faith in you when times get tough.
    In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Making The Most Of Your Influence

I was walking into a coffee shop when I saw a mom with a stroller and a kindergarten-aged son making the most of her influence.

197 Making The Most Of Your Influence

The mother walked up to a homeless man sitting near another door and asked if he would like a gift card she had for a local pharmacy.  She had $15.00 left on it and felt to give the card to him.  He was very thankful, stood up to receive it and left.

Making the Most of Your Influence

I spun around, walked right back out the door and told her how impressed I was by her kindness and generosity.  When I let her know I thought it was powerful she did this for her son to see, they both smiled big!

Parenting Well Isn’t For The Weak

There’s a famous poem called “Children Learn What They Live”.1  It has been both an encouragement and a wake-up call for me in years past.  As a parent, you influence daily.  Children watch your every move…even following you into the washroom at times…but you don’t have to be a parent to be a daily influencer.

“And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.”
    Titus 2:7   NLT

If you work in an office, on a farm, in a factory, as an officer of the law…wherever you work, the people around you are watching.  Titus reminds us we need to “be an example to people by doing good works of every kind.” That means we’re expected to do a lot of good stuff!

So, give people around you some inspiration for greatness today.  Lead the way by example, making the most of your influence!

    Prayer

Father…Thank you for leading by example.  There’s nothing you ask me to do that you haven’t shown the way.  I’m amazed that you want me to influence others for You.  Help me to look for opportunities to do good and live in a way that will reflect Your love.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Desires of Your Heart

In this crazy world of ours, what we might consider as desires of the heart often are so very far from what that really means.

    315 Desires Of Your Heart

    Desires Of Your Heart

Years ago, my friend Marcy Wurch left me a note under the windshield wiper of my car. This timely message encouraged me to look up Psalm 37:4 “in my little pink Bible”. What Marcy didn’t know is that I was in the middle of writing my first book, Water In The Desert and about to quit.

    Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart

    Psalm 37:4 ESV

    Psalm 37:4 desires Devo 315

    Misquoted & Misunderstood

I feel this verse and others like it have been misquoted and misunderstood by many, but as I read the verse and all those surrounding it, I heard loud and clear the message God was trying to speak to my heart.

I remember thinking, “Who am I to write a book”. I mean, I was a fairly recently divorced and remarried woman with a depressed child. That’s the part the enemy kept reminding me about but he was leaving out the part of how I had been overcoming the difficulties life had brought my way with strength in God and a renewed passion for His calling on my life.

Reading this verse reminded me how the desires of my heart to write books actually were from Him, given at a Woman’s Day Apart in my mid-twenties.

    The True Meaning

The very word desire hints to the fact that some desires are truly God-given, as the verse says!

The word desire comes from the Old French word desire, which is made up of two root words: ‘de’ meaning ‘of’ and ‘sire’ meaning ‘father’. Quite literally, ‘of the father’.

{If you want to geek out,
    you can check the Endnotes
at the bottom for my research
    into the etymology of the word.}

    The Desires of Your Heart

The enemy may want you to discredit your desires, but if you’ve had a longing that languishes, a wish that won’t leave, a dream that doesn’t die, maybe it’s time to ask if it’s ‘of the father’. When the answer’s ‘yes’, follow the psalmist’s advice in the next verses…

“Commit your future to the LORD! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf. He will vindicate you in broad daylight, and publicly defend your just cause.” (Psalm 37:5-6 NET Bible)

    Prayer

Father… Thank You for giving me the desires of my heart. Help me to discern which are from you and what ones aren’t. Let your plans for me flourish as I seek to diminish mine to line up with yours.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • How Do You Stay Growing In Your Faith?

Is growing in your faith 🌱 important to you?

    Psalm 1:3 Amber Lia

How do you stay growing in your faith?

Cue the Confetti, cause’ tomorrow is my 100th Episode for the Soul H2O Radio & Podcast Show!

I’m talking about walking in the freedom Christ has for us as believers and the guest, author Amber Lia shares this verse from Psalm 1:3.

I’ve often used this verse as a prayer, but also a challenge. When it says, “Its leaf does not wither”, I get this picture of a yard with snow covering the ground and a tree in the center with green leaves on it. In the natural, this would never happen… but with God’s supernatural help, anything is possible!

I don’t want to just keep growing in my faith when all the conditions are perfect because let’s be honest, how often are the conditions in your life perfect???

LIKE, REALLLLLLLY NOT THAT OFTEN… if you’re anything like me.

    Sub-Heading H2

So, how do you stay growing when it’s still a winter season in your life? You have to make sure you’re planted in good soil, stay hydrated 💧 and get lots of sun. 🌞

  • Do You Have An Open Mind?

We’re living in a contentious time. Opinions are opposing, sides being taken and it seems like no one has an open mind to the thoughts and concerns of others. I think it’s time we begin to ask ourselves…

    Soul H2O Devotion

314 An Open MindDo You Have An Open Mind?

This past weekend, the eyes of the world were on my county of Canada; one of the nicest, most peaceful countries… normally filled with passive, non-confrontational, overly apologizing people.

A new government ruling for Truck Driver vaccine mandates triggered an uncommon protest that spanned from sea-to-shining-sea. I have friends and family on both sides of the argument, and I’ve seen this divide since the pandemic began.

There have been losses in relationships, jobs, and other areas of society because people aren’t taking, they’re telling… and I don’t think either side is listening well. I’ve never known a more divisive time in the history of our nation, in families, or friendships.

I think we’ve become like the people in Paul’s day who when he wrote about them said,

    2 Corinthians 3:14

    but their minds were closed.
For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set aside only in Christ.

    2 Corinthians 3:14 HCSB

What The Bible Has To Say

The original word for closed in this verse can also be translated at “hardened, render callous, petrified”, its root is the word pōros which is the Greek word for a kind of marble or stone.

The imagery is found in the root. The people’s minds have become as immovable as a slab of stone; rock solid and never changing… but this imagery isn’t being applauded, is spoken of in negative terms.

    Badges

No one should wear the “closed-minded” badge like it’s a badge of honour… because it’s not. Jesus never encouraged this way of thinking but always challenged people to keep an open mind and ask questions, like He did. So often, people asked Jesus questions, wanting pat-answers but He mostly responded with a question to get the person to think through things.

Today, I encourage you to ask God to show you where you’ve become closed to discussion, irritable, stubborn, and downright indignant. Then, let Holy Spirit soften your heart and transform you to hold an open mind.

    Prayer

Father… I thank You for creating me with a body, soul, and spirit. I want my soul; my mind, will, and emotions to show evidence of Your love and leadership in my life. Help my mind to not be full of “rocks”, hardened by my views but soft and open to hear from you and consider the views of others, so I can love everyone like You do; no matter which side of an argument they land on.

    In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Looking For The New

It’s January… time to let yourself reminisce about the past year while looking for the new God has for you! He’s up to something good!

    Soul H2O Devotion

    313 Looking For The New

    Looking For The New

My mom in her semi-retirement has become somewhat of a social media influencer! She’s normally pretty quiet but expressing herself a lot more through posts and people love the encouragement she’s bringing.

At the start of this week, she posted a gorgeous picture of a sunset on their farm, and who doesn’t love a good sunset pic? The very next day, things abruptly changed and since some of us in the family hadn’t listened to the news, we were shocked by the quick change in weather.

    Change Was In The Air

313 Looking For Something New sunset sunrise

    The Winds of Change

In life, you can be taken by storm, like we were, if you’re not listening to God for his subtle cues that the winds of change are blowing. Thankfully, they don’t always blow in a storm but often the breeze of comfort, hope, help, or a new beginning… if you’ve got your eyes peeled.

313 Looking For Something NewI love Isaiah 43:18-19 from the Good News Translation:

    Isaiah 43:18-19

    The Lord says:
“Do not cling to events of the past
or dwell on what happened long ago.
Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now! I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.

    On The Lookout

Discerning when a feeling is God’s prompting for a new beginning and then learning how to navigate that change can be a tricky process, but God promises to never leave you and never forsake you. He’ll be with you through every twist and turn as you pivot where He leads, always looking for the new God has on the horizon.

    Prayer

Father… I thank you for your continual guidance, grateful that you are always with me. Help me to not live in fear, but faith, so I don’t close my eyes to your plans and purposes. I pray you’ll find me to always be looking for the new that You’re doing. May by spiritual eyes be even more wide-open than my natural ones to see the new You’re working on today.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Peace… Lost in Translation

I didn’t grow up in a church that celebrated Advent. I’ve searched out What’s The Right Way To Celebrate Advent? and then did a post each week following the themes of Advent: HOPE, LOVE, JOY, PEACE, and then a special CHRISTMAS message from me.

    Peace… Lost in Translation

My friend Claudia Raymundo only moved to Canada when she was about eight. Claudia is a certified translator and has worked on government projects to put English documents into Spanish or vice-versa. Even with all her training, when we’re talking, it seems there will always come a time when she’ll say, “Oh, how do you say this in English?” and sometimes she says there’s really no way to translate this word or phrase in English, so she paints me a picture with her words as to what it means.

Sometimes it’s just difficult to translate words from one language to another. And the word for peace in Isaiah 9:6 is one of those words.

    peace

    Translating Peace

The English word translated peace here is Shalom in the original Hebrew. It truly is one of those “lost in translation” words. All of our Bibles translate this word to say peace but there really isn’t just one word that aptly defines it. The original word includes all of these definitions: well, happy, friendly; welfare, health, prosperity, peace, (good) health, peace(peaceable, peaceably), prosper(prosperity, prosperous), quiet, tranquillity, contentment, rest, safe(safety), salute, welfare, well, wholly. ¹

Do you see how translating shalom as “just” peace falls short of the original intent of what Isaiah was trying to convey? Jesus is the Prince of Peace but He came to bring much more than peace… much, much more. In our modern language I think holistically healthy and peaceful would be a better way to describe this little word Shalom

    Real Peace

In Luke 2:8-14 the angels proclaim to the shepherds how the Messiah would bring Peace on earth for all men, when they said: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” it wasn’t just some airy-fairy beauty pageant wish for “World Peace”, but a boots-to-the-ground, reality-ready, peace. That doesn’t mean you won’t have difficult circumstances, but that God’s presence, Emmanuel, God with us would bring peace in the midst of chaos, loneliness, and hurt.

Jesus knew what it was like to go through times where he faced complete distress. In the garden of Eden, before His crucifixion, Jesus was under so much anguish that he sweated drops of blood, which we know now is medically possible when someone is that stressed out. The issue isn’t that Jesus stressed this much but that He didn’t stay there.

Through prayer, Jesus released this toxic stress and put His faith in the Father, amidst the most difficult of circumstances. As you read the account of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, you don’t see a man in worry, fear, or distress… He seems unrealistically calm and peaceful, not allowing the difficulties of life to steal the peace in His heart and mind.

Jesus got to the place of peace through struggle, so he could fully become your Prince of Peace. Now, it’s time for you to apply that peace to your life.

    Prayer

Father… Thank You for understanding my need for peace and sending your son .Jesus, I thank You for being willing to come down to this earth and suffer, to be my peace. I ask for your holistically healthy and peaceful presence to invade my mind, emotions, and physical body. Let your true shalom bring peace to every area of my life. In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Why The Gospel Is Good News That Brings Joy

The third week of Advent is a special week and most everyone celebrates with a focus on JOY, along with a pinky-rose coloured candle.

An article in The Daily Press explained how, “The pink candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday” which means “rejoice.” And what colour is as happy and joyful as the colour pink?

It’s not just a different candle that is lit during the third week of Advent, but there are different carols sung too, songs of joy fill churches.

Why The Gospel Is Good News That Brings Joy

Why The Gospel Is Good News That Brings Joy

Pre-pandemic, you just never knew who would be at the Christmas dinner table. My family would often invite people in who didn’t have others to celebrate with and the Lord knows, we always have WAY MORE food than needed. It might be someone who was down and out on their luck or just people who didn’t have family nearby.

I think there’s great joy in knowing that Jesus came to set a seat at the table for anyone, not just a select few.

Take a look at your nativity set and actually think about the people surrounding the manger, along with all the others in the Christmas narratives recorded in Scripture.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord!

    Luke 2:10-11 NIV

First of all, there’s a baby. God could have chosen to come down as an adult but he didn’t. He chose to come down as baby. The gospel is for the youngest of the young. Next, there is Mary and Joseph, she’s a teen mom and he was just a young step dad.

The gospel is for the young.

The first people to hear about the good news of the savior coming to earth was actually Mary’s older cousin Elizabeth. When she found out, she was so excited. Elizabeth and her hubby Zechariah housed Mary for the first part of her pregnancy. They were probably in their 40s or 50s as Zechariah was still working… so the gospel is for middle-aged people too.

The gospel is for middle-aged people.

Anna and Simeon in the synagogue were seniors in their later years, waiting for the promised Messiah and they were filled with joy as they recognized Jesus as the Christ.

    The gospel is for seniors.

The wealthy, wise, and educated magi came from the east. Men with different skin tones, backgrounds, and beliefs from the others in this story.

The gospel is for the wealthy, wise, and educated.
For people of every nationality or ethnicity.

And then, there were the shepherds; just regular, every day, working class people.

The gospel is for the the average Joe or Joanne.

The gospel is good news because it’s for everyone!

No matter your race, creed, colour or family background, the gospel is good news that brings joy for you!

    Prayer

Father… I want to thank You for including me into your family. Your gospel is good news for me. Help me to live in a joy-filled way that entices everyone to long for the good news your love can bring into their lives. In Jesus Name…Amen
