  • Making The Most Of Your Influence

I was walking into a coffee shop when I saw a mom with a stroller and a kindergarten-aged son making the most of her influence.

197 Making The Most Of Your Influence

The mother walked up to a homeless man sitting near another door and asked if he would like a gift card she had for a local pharmacy.  She had $15.00 left on it and felt to give the card to him.  He was very thankful, stood up to receive it and left.

Making the Most of Your Influence

I spun around, walked right back out the door and told her how impressed I was by her kindness and generosity.  When I let her know I thought it was powerful she did this for her son to see, they both smiled big!

Parenting Well Isn’t For The Weak

There’s a famous poem called “Children Learn What They Live”.1  It has been both an encouragement and a wake-up call for me in years past.  As a parent, you influence daily.  Children watch your every move…even following you into the washroom at times…but you don’t have to be a parent to be a daily influencer.

“And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.”
    Titus 2:7   NLT

If you work in an office, on a farm, in a factory, as an officer of the law…wherever you work, the people around you are watching.  Titus reminds us we need to “be an example to people by doing good works of every kind.” That means we’re expected to do a lot of good stuff!

So, give people around you some inspiration for greatness today.  Lead the way by example, making the most of your influence!

    Prayer

Father…Thank you for leading by example.  There’s nothing you ask me to do that you haven’t shown the way.  I’m amazed that you want me to influence others for You.  Help me to look for opportunities to do good and live in a way that will reflect Your love.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Desires of Your Heart

In this crazy world of ours, what we might consider as desires of the heart often are so very far from what that really means.

    315 Desires Of Your Heart

    Desires Of Your Heart

Years ago, my friend Marcy Wurch left me a note under the windshield wiper of my car. This timely message encouraged me to look up Psalm 37:4 “in my little pink Bible”. What Marcy didn’t know is that I was in the middle of writing my first book, Water In The Desert and about to quit.

    Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart

    Psalm 37:4 ESV

    Psalm 37:4 desires Devo 315

    Misquoted & Misunderstood

I feel this verse and others like it have been misquoted and misunderstood by many, but as I read the verse and all those surrounding it, I heard loud and clear the message God was trying to speak to my heart.

I remember thinking, “Who am I to write a book”. I mean, I was a fairly recently divorced and remarried woman with a depressed child. That’s the part the enemy kept reminding me about but he was leaving out the part of how I had been overcoming the difficulties life had brought my way with strength in God and a renewed passion for His calling on my life.

Reading this verse reminded me how the desires of my heart to write books actually were from Him, given at a Woman’s Day Apart in my mid-twenties.

    The True Meaning

The very word desire hints to the fact that some desires are truly God-given, as the verse says!

The word desire comes from the Old French word desire, which is made up of two root words: ‘de’ meaning ‘of’ and ‘sire’ meaning ‘father’. Quite literally, ‘of the father’.

{If you want to geek out,
    you can check the Endnotes
at the bottom for my research
    into the etymology of the word.}

    The Desires of Your Heart

The enemy may want you to discredit your desires, but if you’ve had a longing that languishes, a wish that won’t leave, a dream that doesn’t die, maybe it’s time to ask if it’s ‘of the father’. When the answer’s ‘yes’, follow the psalmist’s advice in the next verses…

“Commit your future to the LORD! Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf. He will vindicate you in broad daylight, and publicly defend your just cause.” (Psalm 37:5-6 NET Bible)

    Prayer

Father… Thank You for giving me the desires of my heart. Help me to discern which are from you and what ones aren’t. Let your plans for me flourish as I seek to diminish mine to line up with yours.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • How Do You Stay Growing In Your Faith?

Is growing in your faith 🌱 important to you?

    Psalm 1:3 Amber Lia

How do you stay growing in your faith?

Cue the Confetti, cause’ tomorrow is my 100th Episode for the Soul H2O Radio & Podcast Show!

I’m talking about walking in the freedom Christ has for us as believers and the guest, author Amber Lia shares this verse from Psalm 1:3.

I’ve often used this verse as a prayer, but also a challenge. When it says, “Its leaf does not wither”, I get this picture of a yard with snow covering the ground and a tree in the center with green leaves on it. In the natural, this would never happen… but with God’s supernatural help, anything is possible!

I don’t want to just keep growing in my faith when all the conditions are perfect because let’s be honest, how often are the conditions in your life perfect???

LIKE, REALLLLLLLY NOT THAT OFTEN… if you’re anything like me.

So, how do you stay growing when it’s still a winter season in your life? You have to make sure you’re planted in good soil, stay hydrated 💧 and get lots of sun. 🌞

  • Do You Have An Open Mind?

We’re living in a contentious time. Opinions are opposing, sides being taken and it seems like no one has an open mind to the thoughts and concerns of others. I think it’s time we begin to ask ourselves…

    Soul H2O Devotion

314 An Open MindDo You Have An Open Mind?

This past weekend, the eyes of the world were on my county of Canada; one of the nicest, most peaceful countries… normally filled with passive, non-confrontational, overly apologizing people.

A new government ruling for Truck Driver vaccine mandates triggered an uncommon protest that spanned from sea-to-shining-sea. I have friends and family on both sides of the argument, and I’ve seen this divide since the pandemic began.

There have been losses in relationships, jobs, and other areas of society because people aren’t taking, they’re telling… and I don’t think either side is listening well. I’ve never known a more divisive time in the history of our nation, in families, or friendships.

I think we’ve become like the people in Paul’s day who when he wrote about them said,

    2 Corinthians 3:14

    but their minds were closed.
For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set aside only in Christ.

    2 Corinthians 3:14 HCSB

What The Bible Has To Say

The original word for closed in this verse can also be translated at “hardened, render callous, petrified”, its root is the word pōros which is the Greek word for a kind of marble or stone.

The imagery is found in the root. The people’s minds have become as immovable as a slab of stone; rock solid and never changing… but this imagery isn’t being applauded, is spoken of in negative terms.

    Badges

No one should wear the “closed-minded” badge like it’s a badge of honour… because it’s not. Jesus never encouraged this way of thinking but always challenged people to keep an open mind and ask questions, like He did. So often, people asked Jesus questions, wanting pat-answers but He mostly responded with a question to get the person to think through things.

Today, I encourage you to ask God to show you where you’ve become closed to discussion, irritable, stubborn, and downright indignant. Then, let Holy Spirit soften your heart and transform you to hold an open mind.

    Prayer

Father… I thank You for creating me with a body, soul, and spirit. I want my soul; my mind, will, and emotions to show evidence of Your love and leadership in my life. Help my mind to not be full of “rocks”, hardened by my views but soft and open to hear from you and consider the views of others, so I can love everyone like You do; no matter which side of an argument they land on.

    In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Looking For The New

It’s January… time to let yourself reminisce about the past year while looking for the new God has for you! He’s up to something good!

    Soul H2O Devotion

    313 Looking For The New

    Looking For The New

My mom in her semi-retirement has become somewhat of a social media influencer! She’s normally pretty quiet but expressing herself a lot more through posts and people love the encouragement she’s bringing.

At the start of this week, she posted a gorgeous picture of a sunset on their farm, and who doesn’t love a good sunset pic? The very next day, things abruptly changed and since some of us in the family hadn’t listened to the news, we were shocked by the quick change in weather.

    Change Was In The Air

313 Looking For Something New sunset sunrise

    The Winds of Change

In life, you can be taken by storm, like we were, if you’re not listening to God for his subtle cues that the winds of change are blowing. Thankfully, they don’t always blow in a storm but often the breeze of comfort, hope, help, or a new beginning… if you’ve got your eyes peeled.

313 Looking For Something NewI love Isaiah 43:18-19 from the Good News Translation:

    Isaiah 43:18-19

    The Lord says:
“Do not cling to events of the past
or dwell on what happened long ago.
Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now! I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.

    On The Lookout

Discerning when a feeling is God’s prompting for a new beginning and then learning how to navigate that change can be a tricky process, but God promises to never leave you and never forsake you. He’ll be with you through every twist and turn as you pivot where He leads, always looking for the new God has on the horizon.

    Prayer

Father… I thank you for your continual guidance, grateful that you are always with me. Help me to not live in fear, but faith, so I don’t close my eyes to your plans and purposes. I pray you’ll find me to always be looking for the new that You’re doing. May by spiritual eyes be even more wide-open than my natural ones to see the new You’re working on today.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • What’s The Right Way To Celebrate Advent?

Last December, I ran an Advent Series all over on: the Soul H2O Radio & Podcast Show, through the Soul H2O Devotions, and on Instagram Lives. I focussed on all the aspect of Advent and learned a lot! I didn’t grow up in a tradition that celebrated Advent so, it was super insightful and gave new depth to some of our Christmas traditions and why we do them.

    Soul H2O Devotion

I didn’t grow up in a church that celebrated Advent. To be honest, my extent of Advent knowledge didn’t go much beyond the chocolate door calendars I bought my children when they were young, until this year. I finally began my search to find out…

309 Right Way To Celebrate Advent

What’s The Right Way To Celebrate Advent?

In my quest to find out what to do, I’ve discovered the true heart of Advent and I think it will forever change the way I celebrate Christmas. But first, I need to let you know that Advent is not Biblical.

There’s not one verse in the Bible that anyone could share with you to validate observing the tradition of Advent. In fact, celebrating Christmas isn’t even Biblical, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good thing, or even a great thing.

Advent is not Biblical, but it is beautiful!

It’s interesting to note that the word advent comes from the Latin word ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’. By 380 AD, Advent was a two-week fast to focus your thoughts on the second coming of Christ, matching the encouragement in

    Titus 2:13,
    “waiting for our blessed hope,
the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”
    ESV

Advent is to Christmas, what lent is to Easter; a time to prepare your heart and focus on Christ but like most traditions, they change over time. Some good, and some bad changes.

    Traditions

Advent isn’t just about wreaths, candles, caroling, calendars or candy but all those things can be beneficial, if the focus remains on the original intent.

Somewhere between the 16th – 18th Century, evergreen wreaths with candles became a part of the tradition. Both the circle and evergreens symbolize eternal life. Some wreaths have holly and berries, asserting the red represents Christs suffering and sacrifice, while others only use the greenery. All beautiful symbolism, but no set standard of how to create them.

There isn’t even a standardization of the number of candles, colors or themes for Advent. I searched dozens of websites and found variations in themes, but all chose four out of: Hope, Faith, Love, Joy, and Peace. Some also add a fifth candle in the centre on Christmas day to represent Christ.

The most beautiful part of Advent is the intent to focus on three aspects of Christ coming to be with us, sit with us, and save us.

    Purposes of Advent

    • 1. Celebrate Past – Incarnation/Nativity – Christ came to earth
    • 2. Appreciate Present – Salvation – Christ inside of Us
    • 3. Anticipate Future – Jesus 2nd Coming – Live with Christ forever

So, if you ask me What’s The Right Way To Celebrate Advent? I’d say it isn’t a hardened set of steps, but a heart that’s filled with gratitude for all Christ has done and is going to do. It’s living in hopeful anticipation of Christ’s return while experiencing the peace and joy He brings through the love we receive at salvation. Celebrating the past, appreciating the present, and anticipating the future!

    Prayer

Father… I’m so thankful for Jesus. That He left heaven to come down to earth is inexplainable to me, but I’m so grateful. Jesus, that you died, so I could be set free from the bondage of my sin is overwhelming and I can’t wait to see you one day and forever live in your presence where I’ll get to experience peace and joy for eternity. Thank you. In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Powerful Keys of Authority

Hope this devotion about Powerful Keys of Authority empower you to open and close some doors around you!

    Soul H2O Devotion

    keys of authority

    Powerful Keys of Authority

I remember being amazed when I was a little kid in elementary school over all the keys on the school janitor’s key ring. To me, he held such power to have access to go anywhere in that great big building!

Jesus is like a janitor when it comes to keys, except his keyring doesn’t only hold the keys to unlock doors in one building but to every bound place that exists.

Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah and how he would hold the keys to the house of David* and said, “what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” (Isaiah 22:2)

In Revelations 1:18 and Revelations 3:7, the ONE mentioned who has the key of David is Jesus… and again repeats that “what He opens, no one can close; and what He closes, no one can open.” You probably find it easy to accept these words that Jesus is that powerful, but do you realize the most empowering part regarding the keys of David is how Jesus twice said that He’s given YOU His authority, He’s given YOU the keys to bind and loose things on earth; as it is in heaven?

I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

    Matthew 16:19

Right now, Snap’s 1989 song that repeats, “I’ve got the power” is running through my head and I hope it’s swirling through yours too. You’ve got the power. The enemy wants you to think you’re weak but you my friend, have spiritual authority and I hope you’re using it!

*P.S. The “house of David” is referencing the people of God, originally the people of Israel but through faith in Christ, we’ve all been brought into Abraham’s family… so, “the house of David”… that includes you!

    Prayer

Father… I thank you for the truths that are in Your Word. Some are super difficult for me to believe and even harder to put into practice. Help me to live each day wielding my authority like Jesus did with boldness and humility. May I use the keys you’ve entrusted me with to walk in the freedom you destined for me to experience, but… don’t ever let me abuse this power either. In Jesus Name…Amen

  • God’s Got BIG Plans For You!

Well, I know it’s been forever since I’ve written. Life has been busy with many side jobs I’ve just been letting go of to focus on the ministry that God’s called me to… like writing you to bring refreshing! Today, I woke up with this strong sense that I needed to connect with you and share the hope that’s been helping me.

    Much love,
    ~Sherry

God’s Got BIG Plans for You!

Last week was the second anniversary for the Soul H2O Radio & Podcast Show. I can’t believe it’s been two years! The message I felt God encouraging me to talk about was based out of Jeremiah 29:11, one of the most quoted promises of God going. These have been difficult times for the past two years and knowing that God has good plans for your life, for your future really does change your perspective.

    Trusting in His Promises

Trusting that He loves you enough to plan for your future is an incredible thought. God, the creator of all things has YOU on His mind! He’s not thinking anything negative or harmful towards you… NO, God’s Got BIG Plans For You!

    Holding On

Live today holding the promises of God like Jeremiah 29:11 close to your heart and mind. If this isn’t easy for you, I encourage you to download the attached sheet I’ve created called Sherry’s Stash of Promises from God to help provide you with inspiration and collect some promises of your own.

    Prayer

Father… Thank you for loving me so much that you spend time thinking about me. Help me to spend time focussing on your promises, not on my problems.  In Jesus Name…Amen

  • Is It Time To Unpack Your Suitcase?

    Soul H2O Devotion

Is It Time To Unpack Your Suitcase?

Is It Time To Unpack Your Suitcase?

The pandemic is prayerfully coming to a close and the hope of travel is filling my thoughts!

    Overstuffed Suitcases

Right before the first lockdowns hit, I was supposed to leave for a mission’s trip to Kenya and had my bags packed in preparation. My two bags of humanitarian supplies were crammed as full as I could get them. Since I was bringing summer clothes and we were in the dead of winter here in Canada my personal suitcase was packed and over-stuffed already.

I cried when I unpacked my personal suitcase.

I’d left it sitting there packed for a while but then had to face the fact that we weren’t going for a long time as the “two-weeks of lockdown” turned into months. It took our team even longer to come to the decision that we should unpack our humanitarian bags and give the items away because some of the items had ‘best-before’ dates on them and as a result of the pandemic, there were needs in Canada we felt called to meet.

    The Inner Struggle

Struggling to unpack your suitcase because of a missed opportunity is rough but unpacking the baggage from past hurts will be the most difficult, yet most liberating thing you’ll ever do.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence].
    Ephesians 4:31 AMP

    Put Away

After my divorce, I was determined to ‘put away’ as Paul is describing here, all of the unhealthy, unholy, damaging, emotional baggage I had let into the suitcase of my heart… and trust me, it was jam-packed like my Kenya suitcases, pretty much with every article mentioned in this verse. I cry each time I unpack another ‘item’ from my loaded luggage and those tears help to expel the toxicity in my soul.

This verse in Ephesians makes it really clear what emotional baggage can look like but it’s not a complete list. You can focus on the behaviors and try to change those but that doesn’t seem to produce lasting change. It’s the hard work of pulling out the heart issues that trigger your behaviour that will yield the freedom you desire. The exciting news is that the hard work for you is only in recognizing and admitting these issues in your life, and the easy work happens when you let Christ in to unpack your suitcase. He does the heavy lifting!

Is it time to unpack your suitcase? Invite Christ in today and let Him bring healing to your heart as you partner with Him for freedom’s sake!

    Prayer

Father… I’m so thankful that You’re helping me to recognize the sin in my suitcase. I’m going to shift my focus from the things I do, to the things I believe and let stay in my heart. Help me to recognize the article in my suitcase you’re wanting to take out right now. I’m on board to get rid of whatever needs to go and with your grace, I will be free!  In Jesus Name…Amen
